The word emoji is derived from the Japanese characters for picture 絵 (e) and character 文字 (moji). Emoji first originated in Japan in 1988, nearly a quarter of a century later, in October 2010, Unicode published Unicode 6.0 which included emoji and since then they become mainstream globally.
