New emoji are added through Unicode, but they only appear on your device after Apple, Google, Microsoft or another platform includes them in a software update.
If a new emoji shows as a blank box, question mark or missing symbol, your device probably does not support that emoji yet. Updating your operating system is usually the fix.
iOS and iPadOS
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then General, then Software Update. Install any available update, then restart if your device asks you to.
Android
On Android, open Settings and look for System update or Software update. The exact name depends on your phone maker. Install any available system update.
macOS
On a Mac, open System Settings, then General, then Software Update. Install the latest available macOS update.
Windows
On Windows, open Settings, then Windows Update. Check for updates and install anything available.
Some apps also need their own updates before they show the newest emoji correctly. If your system is up to date but an emoji still looks wrong, update the app or check again after a future software release.
